Wari-Bateshwar

Wari-Bateshwar is an archaeological site in Belabo Upazila, Narsingdi, about 70 kilometers northeast of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It is an underground fortified city. According to experts, it is approximately 2,500 years old. However, based on carbon-14 tests conducted on artifacts discovered in 2000, the settlement of Wari has been confirmed to date back to around 450 BCE.
Wari and Bateshwar were two separate places inhabited by the famous Gangaridai people. Wari-Bateshwar was a fortified city or an urban center. The discovery of 2,500-year-old artifacts here proves the existence of an ancient settlement. Almost all archaeologists have identified it as the capital of that settlement. Researchers also recognize it as a site where they found silver coins.
Archaeologists have revealed four earthen fort walls through excavations in Wari. Some ruined portions of these walls, about five to seven feet high, remain. There is also a moat surrounding the fort, which still indicates its existence through visible traces. Behind the fort, there is an earthen embankment known as Asam Raja’s Garh, which was used for the defense of the king and his kingdom.

People established the Belabo Bazar Jame Mosque approximately 300 years ago. The founder and land donor of the mosque was Mr. Mahmud Bepari of Bir Baghob. From the very beginning, this mosque had a unique structure compared to others in the area, originally featuring seven domes.
According to local accounts, people have mysteriously heard recitations of the Quran inside the mosque since its establishment, which has led to its recognition as a spiritually significant mosque. From its early days, large numbers of people attended Friday prayers, often exceeding its capacity.
As the number of worshippers increased over time, Alhaj Abdul Kadir Molla constructed the current structure of the mosque.
Although the mosque has a capacity of about 8,000 people, during the last Friday of Ramadan (Jumatul Wida), around 20,000–22,000 worshippers gather for prayers. Worshippers come not only from this upazila but also from neighboring districts like Kishoreganj and Dhaka. The mosque’s expanded capacity and impressive architecture make it one of the notable attractions of Belabo Upazila.
